An unfortunate byproduct of dry winter weather: parched skin. The worst is when, no matter how moisturized you think your face is, you still get telltale flakes after applying your foundation and/or powder.
Routines can be difficult to start, much less maintain, but celebrity makeup artists Angela Levin and Matin emphasize that the key to a smooth, flake-free canvas is exfoliating and moisturizing regularly. “You just have to moisturize and cleanse well and exfoliate a couple times a week,” says Matin, who suggests a gentle, milky cleanser and oil-free lotion.
After exfoliating, Levin recommends waiting five to 10 minutes for your moisturizer to seep in. Next, she says to “lay a tissue flat on your face and gently tap. The tissue will pick up any excess moisture.”
To help ensure a baby-soft finish, however, you can add a bit of lotion to your liquid foundation and smooth the combined elements onto your face. If, after letting makeup set and applying powder you have any remaining dryness, Matin says to dab a dollop of moisturizer over foundation and problem spots: “You can also try avocado oil and rose oil—they’re very lightweight and won’t make you break-out.”
