WHILE hand-painted wallpapers might spring to mind upon the mention of chinoiserie, it’s not just home décor that is referencing the Orient this autumn. The Met Museum’s celebration of Eastern influence on Western aesthetics last year translated to the catwalks, which in turn prompted a resurgence of Eastern-inspired opulence the red carpet. Margot Robbie proved the power of ornate embroidery in a richly decorated cheongsam-esque gown, while Alexa Chung and Sienna Miller referenced tradition with knot-button fastenings and mandarin collars, showcasing highly wearable incarnations of the trend – the devil is in the detail after all.
