Kate Middleton Wears an Off-the-Shoulder Dress, Because Duchesses Love Summer Trends, Too

When it comes to her fashion, the former Kate Middleton may be looked to more for her buttoned-up suiting and polished silhouettes, but make no mistake: The Duchess of Cambridge appreciates a seasonally apropos trend as much as the rest of us. This much was evident when she stepped out in Berlin in a red off-the-shoulder dress that sent those circles covering her sartorial choices (us included) into a bit of a tizzy.

Duchess Catherine and her husband, Prince William, and their children are currently on a royal tour of Poland and Germany, which has already provided us with plenty of memorable photo opportunities. But for a garden party in honor of Her Majesty the Queen, it was the Duchess’s spin on the cold shoulder that left everyone talking. An off-the-shoulder silhouette might not be the most surprising thing to wear to a midsummer outdoor gathering. (What other garments balance trend-savviness and airiness so effortlessly?) But the Duchess is often lauded for her fashion choices (and her support of British designers)—though not because she sticks to the most of-the-moment runway styles—so this is an unexpected (but much welcomed) development.

Back to the dress: For her foray into the trend zeitgeist, Catherine fell back on one of her go-to brands, Alexander McQueen. The bright red silk-cotton maxi featured a gathered elastic neckline and waistband and a tiered skirt. Though the dress was available at retail (for a cool $3,545), it has of course sold out since the Duchess sighting. However, there’s a mini version of it still in stock—and on sale for $1,957—on Farfetch.

As for accessories, the Duchess kept it simple, though no less luxe, with a pair of beige, scalloped Prada sandals. Beaded drop earrings from Simone Rocha, in an eye-popping red to match the dress, topped off the look. Hey, they can’t all be $51 Zara steals.

First Michelle Obama, now Duchess Catherine? Guess the off-the-shoulder trend still has legs in summer 2017—and we can’t say we’re mad about it.
