E! News anchor and Style Network reality star Giuliana Rancic, a longtime Nivea fan, helped celebrate the brand’s 100th anniversary yesterday at NYC’s Grand Central Terminal (the landmark is hosting a Nivea pop-up shop this week). Here, we glean beauty tips—and insider Hollywood info—from Rancic.
ELLE: What’s your favorite Nivea product?
Giuliana Rancic: The Nivea Crème! It comes in this retro tin and the formula hasn’t changed since I was little girl. I used to watch my mom apply it to her face every morning and night and I’d comment on how white and creamy it was. Now she’s 68-years-old and has the most gorgeous skin. I hope my face looks like hers when I’m that age—I use the Crème as well, because it gives me a dewy look. After adding a little bronzer and eye makeup, I’m good to go!
ELLE: Is there a particular bronzer that you swear by?
GR: I’ve been using Lorac’s Blush/Bronzer Duo in Hot & Spicy for awhile. I just put the bronzer on and use the blush on the apples of my cheeks. I like it because it has shimmer to it; when I’m in front of the camera, it’s all about matte skin—we use a lot of powders by Nars and M.A.C on set—which is the complete opposite of what I prefer in real-life.
ELLE: Do you ever do your own hair and makeup for events?
GR: A lot of times when I travel, I do my own makeup—I can do a whole smoky eye look in about 20 minutes. I did my makeup today. My makeup artist definitely does a better job than I do, but I love doing makeup and can put it on in a pinch. I also like doing hair. Today, I just ran a 1 ½-inch barrel curling iron through it. The reason being is that I got in at midnight last night from L.A. and had to be up at 4:45 this morning. Sometimes it’s just easier and quicker to style my hair myself.
ELLE: Where do you go for your hair color?
GR: I see Tracey Cunningham at Bryon & Tracey for my color. I was just in there on Saturday. But because I have ombré color, I only get my roots done. The rest is just old highlights! I know ombré is going to go out of style soon, but I’m holding on to it for dear life out of sheer laziness. It’s also more affordable. But I think for the fall, I’ll have to do something totally different—maybe chop it all off or change the color.
ELLE: What’s it like working with Ryan Seacrest? You two seem to have a great rapport.
GR: He messes with me a lot, but I love him so much. Ryan is my OTVH—my “original TV husband”—because I knew him before I knew my husband, Bill. I’ve learned so much from Ryan. We have a mutual respect for each other. I was nervous for Ryan and Bill to meet because I didn’t know what Ryan would say to him. I begged him not to embarrass me and then the second he met Bill, he said, “Bill, how do you put up with her? I’m paid to put up with her.” It was funny. He’s always joking around!
ELLE: You’ve covered tons of awards shows with Seacrest. Who’s your favorite red-carpet interview?
GR: Clooney is a great interview. He’s so charming—he’ll charm your pants off! I also love Julia Roberts. She was super cool. But my favorite is Sandra Bullock. She’s so real. I interviewed her when she won a Globe last year and the first thing she said after I congratulated her was, “Hey, what happened? You sold your Chicago house.” And I go, huh? And she says, “I saw on your show—I love that show.” I just liked that she was so real and could admit that she sits at home and watches reality shows. It was really flattering because I’ve seen all her movies.
