Chances Are Your New Year’s Resolution Will End Today

Some people manage to stick with their New Year’s resolutions all year long. But for most of us, the end comes far too soon.

Sooner than you think. 

According to estimates from Foursquare and Swarm, February 4 is the day you’re most likely to break your New Year’s resolution and never look back. 


To reach this conclusion, the folks at the two location-based apps analyzed check-ins at fast food restaurants and gyms over an entire year.

They found a 36 percent increase in gym visits during the weeks following New Year’s Day, along with a 13 percent decline in visits to fast food joints. But by February 4, the trends had reversed and collided: Gym visits significantly declined, while fast food check-ins started to soar. 

In short, they determined, Feb. 4 is the day when most people “fall off the wagon,” trading their New Year’s fitness goals for heaping plates of fries.

Of course, this data only accounts for users of Foursquare and Swarm. But it does jive with the research-backed idea that lofty goals — like hitting the gym every day while avoiding junk food entirely — are harder to keep than more reasonable, measurable aims. 

Consider a New Year’s goal that has nothing to do with fitness, and tap into plenty of hacks that keep it going all year long. It’s never too late to start a new habit, either. Go for it today!
