The Ditzy Ponytail

For those who have resorted to a topknot one too many times but also hate to blow out their hair, this is your new favorite style for spring. Named by celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin, the “off-duty” or “ditzy” ponytail is a high ponytail that’s teased so it looks fluffy, full, and pretty — and only takes a couple of minutes to accomplish.

Delicate Dye Job

One of the biggest hair trends of the past year, this style is beloved for its easygoing appearance and low-maintenance nature. “Babylights are super soft highlights that delicately soften the roots of solid-colored hair,” says Devin Toth, hairstylist at Salon SCK and Rowenta brand ambassador. Unlike chunky highlights, platinum bleach-and-tones, or solid dye jobs, babylights are perfect for folks who want their hair to look great while only necessitating a visit to the colorist two or three times per year.

Nice Knots

Got short locks? Try this trendy style, known as the low knotted updo, that looks super tough but is surprisingly easy. “Divide your hair into four sections, then twist each one tightly to form knots,” explains Pantene celebrity hairstylist Gabriel Samra. “Then pin each in place, gently tug each one a bit to loosen, and add some hairspray to set.”

Hand-Painted Hair

If you’re looking for an easygoing style that won’t have you schlepping back and forth to the salon, try balayage, which involves hand-painting highlights for a natural look. “Balayage has been getting more popular every year and in 2016, it’s stronger than ever,” says Samra. “It requires very little maintenance because the color grows out much more naturally than foil highlights, which are very precise, making the line of demarcation super obvious.” A natural look without much upkeep? Yes, please.

Twisted Trick

If you have Rapunzel-status hair, you may be accustomed to a typical topknot or ponytail, but there are so many other styles to try, like this amazing infinity bun.

“To accomplish this, you only have to pull your hair tightly into a ponytail, then twist,” explains Samra. Grab a section of your ponytail and “begin twisting it clockwise. Then, wrap it around the elastic to form a loop shape and pin.” Once you’re done with that section, grab half of the hair that’s left and twist it in the opposite direction. Then pin it up on the other side of the elastic. Finally, grab the last bit of hair and drape it along that first section to really enhance the infinity symbol shape, and pin. Gently fan the style out a bit with your fingers, and spritz with some dry shampoo to add texture.

Lobs, Lobs, Lobs

This celebrity staple shows no signs of stopping in 2016, and with good reason. “A happy medium between short and long, this shoulder-length sensation is making a statement,” remarks Samra. “The beauty of the long bob is its versatility and ability to be worn a number of ways.” The length allows for every kind of style — curly, straight and even beach waves.
